thank you Gollancz for sending me a copy of Sanctuary

The small Connecticut town of Sanctuary is rocked by the death of its star quarterback.

Daniel’s death looked like an accident, but everyone knows his ex-girlfriend Harper is the daughter of a witch – and she was there when he died.

Then the rumours start. When Harper insists Dan was guilty of a terrible act, the town turns on her. So was his death an accident, revenge – or something even darker?

As accusations fly and secrets are revealed, paranoia grips the town, culminating in a trial that the whole world is watching . . .

First Thoughts ✨

This book started off slowly. We were introduced to a lot of characters in a short space of time – which is what I normally except in Mystery, and I think in this book it was done well, with little confusion. But as I said, it started off slow and I found some of the character chapters boring, there’s always that one POV that you dread!

Story 📚

This story was so unique and I loved it! It’s definitely Big Little Lies meets witches! The mystery was done so well and was woven into the story brilliantly. By the the mid point I couldn’t stop listening to this book – I had to know what happened next!

Characters 👪

Sarah – I loved Sarah’s character so much. Her mom-persona was written SO well! I felt everything she felt for her daughter Harper. She was also a very skilled witch and I loved when we got to see her chapters!

Harper – Hm, Harper felt fine to me. We really didn’t get many chapters with her perspective she was really just in the background as the accuse in this novel.

Abigail – Abigail was written really well for her purpose and arc. She was so infuriating I wanted to punch her in the faces multiple times – she was a great antagonist but nothing more.

Last Thoughts 💭

This was my favourite book of the year till the end few chapters. I really didn’t enjoy the ending as it felt very different from where I thought the story was heading. It felt rushed and un-needed. If the ending was done differently I’m sure I would have loved this book so much more.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ .25
