On the edge of town a beast haunts the woods, trapped in the Gray, its bonds loosening…
Uprooted from the city, Violet Saunders doesn’t have much hope of fitting in at her new school in Four Paths, a town almost buried in the woodlands of rural New York. The fact that she’s descended from one of the town’s founders doesn’t help much, either—her new neighbours treat her with distant respect, and something very like fear. When she meets Justin, May, Isaac, and Harper, all children of founder families, and sees the otherworldly destruction they can wreak, she starts to wonder if the townsfolk are right to be afraid.
When bodies start to appear in the woods, the locals become downright hostile. Can the teenagers solve the mystery of Four Paths, and their own part in it, before another calamity strikes?
First Thoughts ✨
This book, for me started of slowly. We were getting introduced to a lot, really quickly. The founders, their children, their story lines and their personalities. I would have liked it more if we found about the different characters at different stages of the story. Other than that, the atmosphere was created perfectly. It instantly gave off that creepy vibe that I was looking for in a book like this.
The story line of this book, I thought was really unique. The aspect of the Gray was really cool and it’s powers, still remain a bit of a mystery to me, but I think that was intended. I loved seeing this from an outsiders perspective as Violet was new to town and she was also experiencing everything for the first time. Also A++ to representation in this book.
As I’ve mentioned, there are a lot of characters in this book, and some of them were quite boring while some super interesting. I loved Violet’s character. She was headstrong and determined. Harper was such an interesting addition to the story, her story line of losing and arm and dealing with it was very well done. To me Isaac and Justin felt like the same person, I would love to see them more explored in the next book.
Last Thoughts 💭
The ending of the story was SUCH a cliffhanger, which as you all know I love. I can’t wait to see what The Deck of Omens brings along.
